Car activities

We are planning to return to Atlantic Beach, NC in a couple of weeks.  My mom's parents have a time share there.  Many summers growing up we spent a week in August there.  Until last year, I think the last time I went was probably 7th grade or so.  Adam, the girls, Ninny, and myself went last year, both for vacation and to encourage Mom and visit with Pop after his stroke.  We had a fantastic time!  Chloe loved everything about it..except for the loudness of the water and the feel of the sand.  Autumn was small, so she doesn't remember it.
This year will be different.  Pop will not be there (but he's in heaven with Jesus...probably fishing for men :)! )  Autumn is older and will LOVE the water AND the sand, I think.  She is definitely our daughter with no fear, so we'll have to keep eagle (or seagull) eyes on her.  We've already told Chloe about it...half the excitement of a trip is in the anticipation and preparation, right?  We are counting down the days.  Perhaps 16 days ahead of time was a little too soon to tell her :)  Her favorite part last year was finding a starfish.  It was just sitting on the edge of the tide when she and I were walking along.  I tried to explain to her that I had NEVER seen one on the beach before.  But hey, who doesn't like to search among the shells for treasures?  She says she is going to walk on the sand this year, build sand castles, and swim in the pool.  Last year, the water and the temperature were too chilly to swim in the ocean.  Since we had an unseasonably warm winter this year, maybe it will be warm enough for our legs at least.  Ninny is going with us again.  Perhaps Two-Daddy will join her this time.
In preparation for this trip (10ish hours the first day...couple the next day after worship and then the return trip, of course), I have been planning car activities.  I am just as bad as a child.  I want to BE there!  There's only so much reading, sleeping, and talking a person can do.  However as a parent, I want to cherish the bonding experience a road trip can be.  Adam and I grew up traveling and both really like to go on road trips.  I want our children to be the same way.
I've looked on pinterest for ideas and gone through all my child art supplies.  I think we have some pretty good entertainment lined up!  I've made each of them a felt boards.  I cut out felt pieces for faces, an ocean theme, sand castle building, and cupcake decorating.  I have other things lined up and will post pictures of things as the trip draws nearer, but I would love to hear your ideas.  Chloe is just over 3 and Autumn is 18 months old.
What are your summer vacation plans?  What is your favorite activity as an adult?
