Pop, my maternal grandfather, had a massive stroke this past Monday. Adam and I had been planning a trip to NC (where my mom's family lives) to see them in May. However, I felt it was necessary for me to make the trip as soon as I could. My sister and her family drove up from Memphis to make the trip with me and my girls. Adam was covered up at work and also had an interview that he had to stay behind for. Perhaps there will be details on the road trip later...for now, all went much better than I expected with 3 children under 4.
I am so glad we made the trip! Everyone got to meet Autumn, including Pop. I am not certain he knew who she was or who Chloe and I were, but I choose to think that he did. I think we were at least encouraging to Mom (my grandmother).
Here are a few fabulous memories I have with Pop.
My mom has always told this story about him. We used to always take a trip to the beach for a week during the summer. When my sister was a baby, the women left Pop and Bubba (my uncle) with me and Ellen. Ellen squalled and squalled and they couldn't figure out what was wrong. All she wanted was a bottle, but they didn't think of that :)
He's always been a little accident prone. The one accident I remember most was when I wanted to go fishing. He was helping me get some poles ready and got a fish hook stuck in his hand. This wasn't just a little stuck either, ended up having to be cut out if I remember right.
During the 4th of July festivities, Pop can be found tending the grill. He makes some pretty stupendous ribs and chicken!

Fourth of July has become a big holiday at Mom and Pop's river house. Lots of family comes to visit. Here's a photo from 2009 of Pop, Reagan (my cousin's little girl), and Chloe hanging out on the hammock.

They've been married for more than 50 years! They've had some pretty trying times, but have always worked through them. Now, in the hospital, Mom will not leave Pop's side. She doesn't want him to be left alone during this difficult time. While we visited, I admired how tenderly she cared for him and ensured that he was getting the best care possible. She didn't complain about being tired, though she hadn't slept in days. She is not worried about herself, only about keeping her lifetime companion comfortable and helping him recover.
I love you, Pop!

very moving.
